Hosting company
To get a website online, it has to be stored on a server that makes it accessible via the World Wide Web. There are a lot of web hosting companies that allow you to host your site by providing their clients with a certain space on one of their servers to store the website files and data. Choosing the hosting company depends on your needs and budget. A great hosting company that we trust is Bluehost, they offer unlimited disk space, bandwidth, email account, a free domain name and more, check out their website on www.bluehost.com .
Domain Name
A domain name is an internet address that points to your server and therefore, becomes your site address, for example: www.google.com . Domain names are becoming very cheap over the years. You can purchase a domain name on a website like www.godaddy.com but if you sign up for an account with Bluehost, you get your domain name for free included with the package. Think about a domain name that’s catchy and easy to remember. A good tip is also to think about a domain name that contains keywords relative to your site content, for example if you want to sell jewelry on your website and that your company is based in Toronto, you might want to buy a domain similar to buyjewelryintoronto.com since your potential clients are most likely to type “Buy jewelry in Toronto” on google.
Static vs Dynamic
Once you got your hosting and domain name, you have to figure out what type to website you need: Static, or dynamic? A static website is usually coded in such a way that it can’t be updated by someone that doesn’t have programming knowledge. The advantage of having a static website is that it’s cheap to develop and are good for very small companies, the disadvantage is that every time you have to edit them, you will have to call a webmaster to do the job and might end up costing you more than a dynamic website. Dynamic website on the other hand, are coded in a way that allows their owners to be able to edit them via an administration panel and therefore, the client has the liberty of updating his/her site from any place at any time without the programming knowledge.
CMS:
If you choose to have a dynamic website your site will have a Content Management System (CMS), you’ll get a lot of advantages: for example, if you need to update a certain page or blog, you only have to login to the administration panel, and make the changes needed. This is a great and economical way to get your updates instantly available on the internet.
Flash or no-flash?
The short answer is: Flash sites might have an interesting visual look with all the animations that you can have, but there are several problems surrounding Flash-based sites:
- Flash isn’t SEO Friendly so the text embedded in your flash website cannot be read by google, that will result bad site ranking.
- Flash isn’t readable by a lot of devices such as Iphone, Ipod, Ipad and lags on many computers and browsers such as Internet Explorer
- Most flash websites don’t have an administration panel and therefore are like the other static websites: they can’t be updated by anybody other than the webmaster that created it.
If u absolutely need a flash site, the best thing is to have an alternative non-flash version with the same or similar design but without the bells and whistles.
Keep in mind that there are new technologies that are gradually replacing flash such as JQuery, HTML5 and CSS3.
